Employment + Training

We know that when you are preparing to discharge from service, or already out on civvie street, that finding work can be a challenge as we have never had to previously navigate the recruitment aspects that we see with civilian businesses. Plus, while we get a great cross section of experience in so many different areas, we often see Defence fail to translate this to recognised qualifications that meet the requirements on civvie street

Then add in the stress that many of us have a family that we want to work and provide for, there can be many worries as veterans we face once out of Defence.

Veteran Financial Connect has partnered with a number of recruitment companies and business who are willing to hire veterans and their family through our jobs board, or via direct employment referrals, so if you are looking for work or may just simply want a change of job, then click below and register your interest for work and let us know what sort of work you are after.

This is a no cost service to any veteran and veteran family.

Training - RPL

We know first hand the importance of what a piece of paper means on civvie street, and while it doesn't necessarily mean some civvie can do the job, it is important to take the opportunities you can in your employment transition into civvie street, and what matters to a potential employer.

That is why we have partnered with a training provider that has a long history of supporting veterans and emergency services - particularly Police - to get their experience recognised through RPL.

RPL can be a quicker and more cost effective way to get your skills recognised over lengthy periods of study and sitting in a painfully boring classroom, to help you on your civilian employment journey.

We can help support RPL for the following courses across Cert Iv, Diploma and Advanced Diploma:                                                                                             - Leadership and Management.                                                                               - Business                                                                                                                     - Workplace Health + Safety                                                                                     - Security + Risk Management                                                                                   - Government + Investigations                                                                                 - Project Management                                                                                               - HR and                                                                                                                         - Logistics

Challenges for Veterans and Civvie Employment

For many who approach discharge from service and are thinking about the what next for working on civvie street, or for those who have already discharged and need to keep working (as many of us need to do to provide for ourselves and our family), understanding and navigating the civilian employment market can be a huge.

Understanding how your skills can translate into civilian employment can be hard to navigate, especially with the lack of formal qualifications provided to us by Defence can be a big inhibitor, not to mention learning how to "sell ourselves" to an employer.

The reality is that navigating employment can be hard not just for veterans, but for civilians too as the ever changing views and needs of a business can mean what they are needing changes, trying to understand the culture of a business as culture can vary so much from business to business, and as well, having to understand the requirements of how civilian employment expects people to act - doesn't always align to what we are used to!!!

For many veterans, they will feel like their military time is not reflecting in the type of work they might be getting offered, but its important to start looking at how to overcome that, and that is very often fixed by taking a for now job - a job that will start getting you experience in the civilian world job market that you can then use to start down the path towards the job you do want.

Very often employers will also look at attitude, and taking a for now job can reflect very well with a potential employer, as it demonstrates a great work ethic and attitude to persevere.

For some of us, the harsh reality is that our time in Defence has no civilian relevance and in that case, we need to see how we can leverage the skills and attitudes we have to identify and gain employment.  It also becomes very important to learn how to sell ourselves and the skills we have in lieu of direct and relevant role experience.
